Johns Hopkins University

Overview

Johns Hopkins University (JHU) sits on a picturesque campus within the city of Baltimore, Maryland. Known for its strong science and engineering programs, JHU is proud of the fact that its students’ academic interests are diverse (1/3 major in engineering, 1/3 major in sciences, 1/3 major in humanities). Research is definitely part of the culture at JHU, with 70% of students undertaking research across all majors. Undergrads are encouraged to apply for resources to start their own research while at JHU, and many do.

Community

Students at JHU are not just studious, they are also actively involved outside of the classroom, and they can be a bit quirky – inner tube water polo is the most popular club sport. About 1/3 of students are involved in Greek life, and there are strong ties through community service to the local community.

Students

The sense that I got when I visited is that students are really smart, and somewhat intense, but not just about academics. Students are “intense” about arts, about research, about sports, about a capella, and every student is able to explore their passion fully – and this is encouraged both by the school and by friends. JHU would be a great option for a student who is strong in math and sciences (even if you want to study humanities there are quite a few distribution requirements in the sciences), and has a real passion they are dedicated to following, and also wants to be in a city environment with a campus community.
